MAC Cosmetics A Novel Romance look and review

MAC Cosmetics A Novel Romance look and review

It’s the spark, that feeling you get in your stomach. You’ve been swept off your feet…. by MAC Cosmetics, again. A Novel Romance is coming out this week and I have a bit of a sneak preview for you! (full collection info here)

MAC Cosmetics A Novel Romance Highly Charged Electric Cool Eye Shadow pot
HIGHLY CHARGED is a rich purple with pinkish pearl shimmer. It’s an Electric Cool eyeshadow which is a cream to powder finish with a bouncy texture.

This was fairly easily to blend, but keep in mind you need to pat this on for best results (using MAC 242 shader or your finger).

MAC Cosmetics A Novel Romance Highly Charged Electric Cool Eye Shadow 3
Shown here applied with my finger. Blended out into crease with Courtly shadow (from the Palace Pedigreed quad). Vanilla shadow on the browbone, as always.

MAC Cosmetics A Novel Romance Animal Instincts blush
ANIMAL INSTINCTS blush is a shimmering plum with a frost finish.

MAC Cosmetics A Novel Romance Look 1
You know I love my purples and daaaamn this one is perfect for my eye colour.

Also wearing MAC Veluxe Brow Pencil in Strawberry Blonde.

The blush reminds me a bit of Lavish Living blush (Mineralize from the Divine Night holiday 2013 collection). Not something I would normally reach for but I really dig it.

MAC Cosmetics A Novel Romance Switch to Blue Electric Cool Eye Shadow pot
Next look is based around the SWITCH TO BLUE Electric Cool Shadow. It’s a deep cobalt blue with a gorgeous shimmer. This one was a bit softer, more of a mousse texture than the HIGHLY CHARGED.

Mostly applied with my finger and then blended out with a 217 brush (which may have been a mistake because it made it a bit patchy). These shadows are stunning but will take a bit of practice to get the right technique. The colour pay off is SO worth it.

I added a bit of Naval shadow to the outer corner and blended into the crease with Omega. Vanilla on the browbone.

MAC Cosmetics A Novel Romance Cremesheen lipstick
A NOVEL ROMANCE cremesheen lipstick is a light cool dusty pink. On first glance, I thought it looked a bit like VG Gaga I, it’s close just a bit cooler, lighter and more sheer.

The formula glides on like a dream and is easy to blend and even out.

MAC Cosmetics A Novel Romance Look 2
This lipstick shade make my skin look a bit darker for some reason, which I love. It pairs nicely with the ANIMAL INSTINCTS blush and SWITCH TO BLUE Electric Cool Shadow.

Also wearing MAC Fling Eye Brows, MAC Studio Sculpt Foundation.

MAC Cosmetics A Novel Romance Animal Instincts blush face
ANIMAL INSTINCTS blush on my skin (NW15) acts almost like a contour shade because of its bronzey mauve plum. I am going to be rocking this all through the cooler seasons for sure. The shimmer isn’t too apparent so no accentuated pores either.

MAC Cosmetics A Novel Romance Electric Cool Eye Shadows
HIGHLY CHARGED, SWITCH TO BLUE Electric Cool Shadows. You can see the purple one swatches a bit heavier (this is 3 swipes each).

For me, the superstars of this show are the Electric Cool Shadows! Cream-to-powder shadows with a bouncy texture seem to be all the rage right now and I am into it. I can’t wait to try out the Fluidline pencils too when these hit store shelves.

The MAC Cosmetics A Novel Romance will be available online at MACcosmetics.com on August 14, 2014 and instores August 21, 2014.

  • my favourite is definitely the blush, i feel like i’m too impatient for the shadows but the purple one is very pretty on you!

  • Tanya Lovetere

    I LOVE the blush!

  • What is on your lips in the picture of you wearing just the purple eyeshadow?

  • The lippie is nice!

  • Yolennie

Highly charged looks beautiful on you! Really made your eyes pop 🙂

  • I love that lipstick colour on you. How do you keep up with all the MAC collections? It seems like they come up with a new one every week!

    • I am on this site called Specktra a lot which keeps me up to date. (I am obsessed). And I can’t believe no one has commented on the naughty book I used for the shoot.

      • OMG how long have you been a Specktralite! That is literally where I got sucked into blogging/makeup. You may even find some very embarrassingly bad makeup attempts by me back in the day.

  • Maggie

Love that lipstick shade! It’s a bit like one of the Lorac ones that I love (colour, not texture, because OMG do I hate the texture on those).

Not sure I’m feeling the Electric Cool shadows. :/

  • When I got wind of this, I wasn’t sure if it was serious or not LOL
MAC has been really taking a bit of a different direction in the last 5-6 years. The colours are always on point but sometimes the concepts do perplex me. I think that last collection that actually really got me excited was the Sharon/Kelly Osborne one. That was so on point!
