Sometimes, my makeup just works. And when it does, I…
Did you see yesterday’s natural look by Kat Von D’s lead artist Erik Soto? Today we’re getting wild! Inspired by Ziggy Stardust and 70s disco glam, this look focuses on the bold and glitzy Kat Von D Metal Crush Eyeshadows, which are my new favourites beauty products to play with.
How to: ZIGGY STARDUST LOOK
(My partner-in-crime for the day was Steph from Fun Size Beauty. See her take on this look)
As always, he started with a good, neutralized base. He used Kat Von D Lock-It Featherweight Primer and a thin layer of Lock-It Tattoo Foundation to give his model flawless, matte skin. When using bold colours and shimmers, he suggested less dewy skin.
He started his look by using a ton of different Metal Crush Eyeshadows and creating finger-width stripes going diagonally up and over the brow. One trick he taught us was to pat the shimmers on to avoid the colours getting muddy.
These eyeshadows have literally no fall out (although I experienced a tiny bit when using Black No. 1). They are 85% pigment and milled using a tumbling effect that really bind the pigment together without the gritty feeling of typical shimmer/glitter shadows.
Next he grabbed Metal Crush in Raw Power, a metallic mahogany, and applied it as a strong contouring blush. Very 80s and very flattering with this look.
On the lips, he wanted to create something longwearing with a bit of texture. This is Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in Santa Sangre (poison apple red) with Studded Kiss Lipstick in Adora on top (metallic golden red). This gives the shimmer colour of the lipstick a good solid base.
Have you ever wondered what the scent of Studded Kiss lipsticks are? It’s Creme Brulee! Because as Kat says, “Who doesn’t love Creme Brulee?”
Next up is the infamous Kat Von D Tattoo liner. One tip from Erik: if your liner seems to stop working, just wipe the tip off with some makeup remover as it’s probably clogged from particles of eyeshadow!
Now, IT’S MY TURN!
For my wild child look, I started with Metal Crush Eyeshadows. I was nervous I would get a ton of fallout but opted to not use my beloved Shadow Shields to really test out the claim.
Black No. 1 is a metallic gun metal.
Iggy is a metallic mermaid green.
Using Black No. 1 and Iggy to create diagonal stripes, I just patted these shades on with a stiff dense brush. I also patted Thunderstruck to highlight the eye, a trick Erik shared with us. Thunderstruck is great to make the eye more “awake”.
Then I wanted to play around with Raw Power because I hadn’t even touched this beautiful metallic burgundy since I received it. For shame!
I kept this simple and patted the shadow on my lid and blended upwards using a technique Erik showed us where you press the brush into the crease and flick up. This blended really nicely and there was actually NO fallout.
On the lips, I pulled out Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in Double Dare, a cocoa blush. I actually grabbed this one even before the new shades hit the store shelves. I stalked my local Sephora and begged them to grab one for me from the back.
Instead of topping this with a Studded Kiss lipstick, I opted for a small highlight of Thunderstruck just on the lower lip. And I am glad I did because this turned out so beautifully!
Inspired by Erik’s use of Raw Power Metal Crush as a blush, I did the same and topped my cheekbones with Thunderstruck mixed with primer. Seriously, these eyeshadows are multi-use!
Compared to budget brand liquid lipstick formulas (ie Colourpop), the Kat Von D one has a lot more flexibility and doesn’t suck the life out of your lips. But remember, always prep beforehand. Put on that Bite Agave Lip Mask at night and a thin layer of NON-OIL-BASED lip balm right before application.
AND GUESS WHAT HAPPENED AT THE END OF OUR LESSON…
My homegirl Kat Von D showed up. After my initial shock (and a brief moment fighting back tears), we actually got to have a nice conversation. Like a true fangirl, I asked her what was on her lips. ADORA is the answer.
“I’d rather be a pioneer than a follower.” – KVD
Kat has a team of people working for her predicting trends and telling her what will be the next hottest thing. She mostly just takes that info and throws it away. She does what she wants and likes to be a trendsetter instead.
I can’t even begin to tell you what this moment meant to me. I have been a huge fan of hers since before L.A. Ink, before the makeup line. She is inspiring, a total badass and someone I have the utmost respect for.
Did you know that Kat Von D’s makeup line holds the #1 spot for lip collection, liquid liner AND contour palette sold in Sephora WORLDWIDE? And she’s just getting started…
